Manager Matters is a new feature section for this journal published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. The many challenges new nurse managers face in this timely addition to the journal are addressed by nationally recognized nursing educator, mentor, and author Shelley Cohen RN MSN CEN.

For more than 15 years, Cohen has been teaching and coaching nurses in transition from a staff role to one of leadership at various levels of nursing management. The first in the series of Manager Matters was released with the Nursing Management February 2013 issue (Volume 44, Number 2w, pg. 9-11).

In "Perspectives on Emergency Department Throughput," (Volume 39, Number 1, pg. 61-64,) Cohen interviews career nurses who agree in the past 30 years emergency department numbers have nearly tripled yet community health resources remain low. Lack of appropriate health care resources for patients, the misuse of emergency departments by patients and poor organizational models within the system can attribute to throughput delays. Long waits, increased medical errors and negligence claims often result, interfering with the patient-centered model. Many who need care wait too long or, in some cases, leave without care.

"This is the time for emergency nurses to become involved proactively," Cohen says. With a rallying call for emergency room nurses, Cohen encourages a collaborative effort between community health centers and hospitals. Citing the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's template to improve patient flow, Cohen explains the problem is not departmental but is organizational-based resulting in a hospital-wide ripple effect. The Journal of Emergency Nursing is the official publication of the Emergency Nurses Association.
